Orchids detest soggy roots and will not thank you for sitting them in a pot of water so the best way to water is remove them from their pot and dunk or flush with rainwater whether in a sink or bath and let the water drip through. Return to their pot once excess water has dissipated.

Feed every couple of weeks when your orchid is actively producing flowers and leaves. Flush water through the growing medium and let it drain then water again using Plantsmith Nurturing Orchid Feed and Tonic. Our professional orchid feed formulation contains 12 essential plant-boosting nutrients – everything your orchid needs to thrive. Your Contributions do not contain any material that solicits personal information from anyone under the age of 18 or exploits people under the age of 18 in a sexual or violent manner. Start feeding houseplants from early spring when they emerge from dormancy and respond to the increase in light levels and develop new growth. Place your orchid in a warm bright space in indirect sunlight and give it time to rejuvenate. In the wild they are used to filtered light so make sure they are not scorched by direct sunlight in a hot spot. They thrive in a constant temperature of around 18°C / 64°F. Silver squill will produce beautiful sprays of blooms in late winter, early spring but if you are struggling to get your plants to flower then this winter make sure your plant has a good rest in a cool location – and that doesn’t mean placing it near some funky wallpaper but make sure the temperature is cool! Reduce watering and stop feeding. Silver squill need a period of dormancy over winter to recharge – don’t we all! PropagationBegonia rexis an impressive tender evergreen perennial originating from Asia. It has large metallic hairy heart-shaped foliage or spiralling snail-like leaves with shimmering silver, pink, purple, burgundy or green markings which retain their impressive multi-coloured display all-year-round. Use shredded bark chips or a professional peat-free compost bark mix to support roots, and if you have one, a clear pot so roots can photosynthesise but if you really want to display Phalaenopsis in your favourite opaque pot then just regularly remove your plant from its outer pot and leave it out on a bright windowsill so roots get access to light. You can also periodically mist plant leaves with Plantsmith ‘ Perfecting Houseplant Care Mist’ to help hydrate and keep it dust-free. Flowering The simplest form of propagation is by division. Bulbs form clusters and will naturally multiple and divide all by themselves. Once bulblets have formed you can carefully remove these and pot on separately. This is a great way to increase your own collection or share plants with friends. Dividing and potting on your Silver Squill is a great way of sharing with friends. It promotes the development of flowers and fruits and helps plant’s resist disease, regulates the plant’s complex processes and increases the plant’s vigour.

They are most happy in a room temperature around 20°C (68°F) but can seamlessly cope with fluctuations. Do not worry if you have to be sparing with the central heating this year. Soil Your Contributions are not obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, violent, harassing, libelous, slanderous, or otherwise objectionable (as determined by us). Dilute your feed into rainwater and depending on the plant, water the soil from the top, water at the base for the roots to absorb or spray as a foliar feed once every two weeks. Most houseplants benefit from drying out between watering so test the soil with your finger to see if it is dry before re-soaking. Fortifying Houseplant Feed & Tonic

If you see these tiny flies on the soil surface, reduce your watering schedule and Spray with Plantsmith Protecting Bug Control Spray. A gravel mulch on the pot’s surface may also help. You can also apply parasitic nematodes, Steinernema feltiae, as a biological control to try and quash the infestation. The nematodes are mixed in a watering can and then applied over the soil as part of your normal watering regime. Always read instructions carefully, and wear gloves when using.Plantsmith’s Fortifying Feed & Tonic can used on all your houseplants and is a blend of 13 essential plant-boosting nutrients which help your houseplants grow strong, glossy leaves and long lasting flowers. It also contains kelp extract which helps stimulate new cell growth. Plants and humans have a perfect symbiosis but some houseplants go one step further and can actually improve air quality by removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), like benzene, ammonia and formaldehyde. Nitrogen helps produce proteins which make our cherished leafy green foliage. If a plant is nitrogen deficient you will see leaves turning pale yellow or green; alternatively too much nitrogen will send your houseplant into overdrive producing an abundance of leaves. The balance needs to be right.
