About this deal

Interestingly, for the first few years of manufacture, the germanium diode was incorrectly oriented, meaning the pedal had a sound all of its own. This was later corrected, returning it closer to the sound of the original. Classic tones When the clipping circuit is arranged like this, it makes no discernable difference to the sound whether the gates are tied to the sources or drains. The BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 integrated perfectly with my setup. At last, I had the amount of sustain I wanted, but also enough mids to be able to punch through. OK, the BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 isn’t as middy as the Joyo Ultimate Drive or the Electro-Harmonix East River Drive, but it’s enough. Boosting it worked out great too as I now had the spare headroom in the mids for the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive V2 to work its magic and give a lift for leads. In a nutshell, the BOSS Blues-driver BD-2 is voiced perfectly for my needs. Not too gainy, not too middy, but with enough mids to cut. The JOYO JF-02 Ultimate Drive, as the name suggests, is a very versatile gain pedal effect. It has three control knobs, and the impact it gives you depends on the setting of the channel switch. I also modified this pedal (specifically the Harley Benton Ultimate Drive). In addition to the well-known modification of the turns of the MOSFET transistors, I also changed the input capacitor to the MOSFET buffer C1 = 1 uF -> 10 nF for a better high-pass filter. Next, I increased the resistor from virtual ground to opamp R5 = 470k -> 1M for higher Zin. I replaced TL082 with RC4558 for better filtering.

The Zendrive was originally designed to emulate the legendary tones of a Dumble Overdrive Special: the elusive amps built by Alexander Dumble cloaked in mystery and played by the likes of Larry Carlton, Carlos Santana and Robben Ford. And yes, I also added filtering ceramic capacitor 100nF between power supply pin and ground pin of opamp (less noise). Several factors of the OCD contribute to its versatility, but the main one is the two switchable modes it has. A small toggle switch at the top of the pedal lets you select between LP (Low Peak) mode, and HP (yep you guessed it, High Peak) mode. Closeup of the Fulltone OCD's ControlsEarthQuaker Devices built this pedal specifically with low wattage amps in mind. We played it on four tube amps and it sounded great, although different, with all of them. This very attractive boutique pedal offers three familiar knobs, VOLUME, DRIVE, and TONE. There's also a Gain toggle switch, which changes the LED light from blue to red and gives you more low end grit and punch. Think of it as two levels of boost - the effect is subtle, but still noticeable (you can actually plug in an external foot switch to toggle this setting with your foot). You'll also hear the term "transparent overdrive" which refers to a pedal that focuses on retaining the "color" of your guitar and amp's tone by not compressing the sound as much. In practice this is a subtle detail, and if you're just starting out you probably shouldn't worry about it as much. I've never seen any evidence that that is the way they're connected. The photos I've seen never quite show enough detail.

The terms distortion and overdrive are often used interchangeably; where a distinction is made, "distortion" is used to denote a more extreme version of the effect than "overdrive". In extremely simple terms, overdrive is a form of distortion. It's just generally accepted by guitarists as the lighter version of distortion. My educated guess is that this redesign was mainly intend to avoid possible issues on the intellectual property of the circuit design, by adding a buffer, rearranging the clipper, and changing one (insignificant) resistor value. The overdrive pedal party is not quite complete without Boss in the mix, and the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive is one that should never be overlooked. After all, this is the company behind the storied OD-1, which in 1977 was the first overdrive pedal on the market.Fender Santa Ana Overdrive » Fender-style tube amp breakup tone with tons of options + boost. For being so popular, the TS9 Tube Screamer is actually not very versatile. It does one thing, and it does it well. We’ll borrow this line from a review we liked: Despite its name, the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver works for far more than just blues. It's often mentioned in the same breath as the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, which is high praise. Considering how legendary the Tube Screamer is, that’s pretty high praise. Artists like John Mayer and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day have used this pedal in their live setups (John Mayer used one that was Keeley-modded). Let’s find out why.
