About this deal

Mr Chittenden, a father-of-three, helped to clear 16-year-old Roy Brookes of the murder of Sinfin girl Lynn Siddons when he was acquitted of the killing in 1978. He was one of three men to set up Smith Partnership in the 1980s and 18-months ago said goodbye to the courtroom after a long and distinguished career. Within the papers was, Mr Chittenden said, evidence from Roy Brookes that he had been put up by his stepfather to take part in killing Miss Siddons with him. Read More Related Articles

Justice, Mrs Siddons said: "We've been going for 20 years now and I am very pleased with the result." Flo's daughter Gail Holford, said: "It was a long hard fight but my mum was always there at the front. The memorial was arranged by British Waterways and is located about two miles from Lynn's home in Sinfin. A 20-year dispute over who murdered teenager Lynn Siddons on a canal towpath in Derby has ended after the Court of Appeal upheld the conviction against Michael Brookes.Speaking at the time, he said: "Lynn Siddons's family had this incredible resolve and Flo was the driving force behind it all. Mr Chittenden said he then made the decision to release the papers to solicitors acting for Miss Siddons's family. It was only then that Derbyshire Police, who accepted criticism of the way they had handled the case, charged Brookes with the murder.

The motive for the murder is readily apparent, because teenage girls always look up the age range for sexual and romantic encounters, never down it, and in addition to his age, no doubt the boy's evident puniness and his murderous potential would have added to his unattractiveness for her. A friend of 16-year-old Lynn, Fitzroy Brookes, confessed to the murder, but was acquitted at his trial after accusing his stepfather Michael of the murder. His conviction followed a rare civil suit brought by Lynn's family after police decided not to charge him with murder. Flo Siddons and her family fought to find the man who stabbed 16-year-old Lynn Siddons more than 40 times. He said: “In the papers the SRA says that by admitting these actions it constituted conduct that is completely unacceptable on the part of a solicitor and they are absolutely right. The appeal court judges declared that they had "no lurking doubt about the safety of the conviction", which is an astonishing admission, since it means that they had neither instinct nor intelligence for any doubt about it. This would mean that they were not qualified to judge the appeal.
