I really liked this adventure story. It is not like anything that I have read before. (I had never even heard of Jonathan Stroud before reading this book.)

Scarlett and Browne (The Outlaws Scarlett… The Notorious Scarlett and Browne (The Outlaws Scarlett…

In short, it’s a world ripe for storytelling, and filled with tensions that seem bound to boil over. Yet we find ourselves in a small corner of the world, following one (then two) outlaws who are just trying to get by. Scarlett and Albert are a fantastic duo of protagonists, and I am on board to go on many many adventures with them. The book is set in England after some huge disaster, most of the land is flooded or abandoned and there are only a few towns left, the rest is just wilderness. On fleeing the scene, Scarlett finds a crashed bus, all its passengers dead but for a lone boy hiding in the toilet. Enter Albert Browne, “awkward, skinny and wide-mouthed, like a frightened skeleton”, and seemingly a piece of powdery chalk to Scarlett’s pungent cheese. Her scathing sarcasm (and Albert’s obliviousness to it) provides many a laugh: “You just holler if I get in your way,” she seethes as he admires a seed pod while she sets about making a fire, cooking a bird and establishing a camp for them, and all while they’re being pursued. But, for all his unworldliness, Albert turns out to have hidden talents. Sensing he might be of use to her after all, Scarlett agrees to help him accomplish his own mission. Albert wants to reach the Free Isles, remnants of London that “don’t have any restrictions on who you are or what you can do. They welcome people who are...different”, unlike the dictatorial High Council of the Faith Houses, which is “desperate to keep the old ways going”, and “on the watch for any kind of deviation.” Trouble is, as their respective pursuers close in, time and space is running out for our unforgettable outlaws. But their notoriety may have spread a bit too far. Now old enemies from Scarlett’s past and a sinister new threat from Albert’s world are boxing them in—and holding their friends hostage. Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close This is a mistake. Soon there are men with dogs and guns and explosives hot on their heels. Scarlett’s used to being chased by the law, but this is extreme. It was only a little bank she’d robbed . . . This novel contains a fascinating world built by Stroud, where society – such as it is – is expected to conform, but our outlaws have other, bolder ideas. The multi-layered adventure, laced with humour, is led by our pair of anti-heroes on an odyssey - you won’t be able to put the book down. There is something for everyone here in this amalgamation of monsters, gunfights, and strange governmental institutions. Una historia de aventuras y fantasía para leer en cuestión de HORAS, por lo dinámica y divertida que es.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Scarlett and Browne, Book 1 The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Scarlett and Browne, Book 1

From the first sentence of this book, I know it was going to be a good one. I just couldn’t have predicted just HOW good it would be. Wow. I honestly enjoyed every second of reading this book. I just had so much fun and it honestly felt like nothing I’ve read before. The closest book for comparison I can think of is Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children but even that doesn’t do the peculiarity and brilliance of this one justice. It felt so wholly unique. We don't need to be told all of these things right away or have every aspect of them explained in excruciating detail, but we do need something. I assume it will all be explained in later books, but we need something to compel us to keep reading to get to those books and I'm just not invested in the world.I love the they affect one another; Scarlett becomes more like Albert, and Albert becomes more like her. So after playing with magic and horror, Mr Stroud decides to show us yet another version of Britain: this time, some unspecified cataclysm had occurred, causing the collapse of modern society and turning the nation into an analogue of the Wild West frontier replete with outlaws, bandits, and six-shooters (along with giant mutant animals and cannibal zombies for good measure). London, as we learned early on, is now a lagoon, and the country was split into seven kingdoms reminiscent of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy in the 5th century. As they flee together across the wilds, fighting off monstrous beasts, and dodging their pursuers, Scarlett comes to realize that Albert Browne is hiding a terrible secret. And that he may be the most dangerous threat of all.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne Series - Goodreads

Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Albert was nothing but a nuisance to Scarlett but became her friend. Scarlett started off as a guide to Albert and ended up becoming Albert's inspiration. Je mets rarement 5 étoiles. Je trouve souvent que les longs romans finissent par s'essouffler, qu'ils ne sont pas constants dans l'émotion qu'ils procurent. Je suis souvent déçue. Well, it's in the title. Scarlett robs banks and kills anyone who gets in her way. At the end of the story, she doesn't change her ways. She does, however, learn to trust Albert and care for people other than herself. She also has many opportunities to leave Albert behind and save herself, but chooses to protect him. Albert has special powers that can turn deadly when he's threatened. He's terrified of these powers at first and had been tortured into hating himself for having them. With the help of Scarlett, the self-hatred diminishes. Still, he's killed a lot of people. Beyond the walls are the wilds where beasts and ‘The Tainted’ roam and you don’t want to be outside the walls at night-time as this is when they are most active and you will be their prey. Le world building. Les odeurs, la saleté, l'atmosphère glauque... The characters are both likeable, they bounced off one another. Scarlett quite mouthy and opinionated whilst trying to find a way to survive in the harsh world. Browne having not seen the real outside world before was like a cat in the headlights, mesmerised and overwhelmed by everything and he needed Scarlett’s help. He was also keeping a few big secrets about why he is wanted. This book is as beautiful as all of Stroud's previous books. This time we change the setting and from a nineteenth-century London full of magic, we move on to a post-apocalyptic England, made up of small fortified city-kingdoms, where the population lives according to restrictive laws to protect themselves from dangers (mutant and cannibal humans, gigantic bears and wolves and gangs of outlaw men) which live outside the walls, in the wastelands and contaminated country. Anyone who disobeys the law is hanged on the gallows and anyone who is perceived even in the slightest as "not normal" is ostracized by the community and left alone in the woods, easy prey for hungry beasts. The problem is that Albert is very sheltered and knows little about the outside world and yet he doesn't ask a lot of questions. Scarlett isn't interested in asking a lot of questions and finding things out. She doesn't really care and doesn't want to get attached, so we the readers are left in the dark.
